Monet’s Early Life

Before Claude Monet became the father of Impressionism, he was a young boy with a passion for art—one that wasn’t always encouraged. Born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, Monet moved with his family to Le Havre, Normandy, at the age of five. This coastal environment profoundly influenced his artistic vision, fostering a deep appreciation for nature and light.

A Childhood Against Expectations

Monet’s father, Claude-Adolphe, was a successful grocer who hoped his son would join the family business. However, young Claude was drawn to the arts, a passion his mother, Louise-Justine Aubrée Monet, supported. Monet attended the Le Havre Secondary School of the Arts, where he gained local fame for his caricatures, selling them to make extra money. These early works showcased his keen eye for detail and his burgeoning talent.

The Turning Point: Meeting Eugène Boudin

A pivotal moment in Monet’s early life was meeting Eugène Boudin, a local landscape painter. Boudin introduced Monet to painting en plein air (outdoor painting), a practice that became central to Monet’s work. This experience allowed Monet to capture the transient effects of light and atmosphere, laying the foundation for his Impressionist style.

Breaking Away and Finding His Path

Monet’s mother passed away when he was sixteen, leading him to live with his aunt, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, who supported his artistic ambitions. Despite his father’s disapproval, Monet pursued his passion, eventually studying at the Académie Suisse in Paris. There, he met fellow artists who would later form the core of the Impressionist movement.
