Facts About Monet's Garden

1

He started off renting the property in 1883, purchased it in 1890.

2

He needed up to seven full-time staff to help maintain the garden.

3

He had to fight to get his iconic water lily pond built.

His neighbors were opposed to the idea for many reasons:  - the site was separated from his property by a railroad and major street - it was used by farmers as water for their cattle - there were major fears the plants he was planning to put in would taint the local water supply

He fought hard, bought the land, and won the rights to build his pond in 1893.

4

Monet's stepdaughter Blanche maintained the grounds after his passing.

You can still visit the Giverny house and see the gardens!
